Film of the Week
Only God Forgives*
(2013, crime thriller, 90 mins, 18)
Two years ago, Ryan Gosling, director Nicolas Winding Refn and musician Cliff Martinez had an enormous critical and commercial hit with Drive. The same team is behind this film, but it's a very different beast: an art film set in Bangkok that is dividing audiences worldwide. It's certainly not for everybody, but has more visual flair than the vast majority of films released this year. Just don't go in expecting Drive 2, you will be disappointed.

One-off screenings
Taming of the Shrew (Globe on Screen) (2012, comedy, 180 mins + interval). Tricycle, Sunday 5.30pm £15.50
The third and final play in the Globe on Screen season is a filming of the theatre's 2012 production of this most Shakespearean of Shakespeare comedies! There's a Q&A afterwards with director Toby Frow and Simon Paisley Day, who plays Petruchio
New Releases
The Conjuring (2013, horror, 112 mins, 15).
The biggest horror film hit in the US for more than ten years, The Conjuring involves a pair of paranormal investigators working to help a family terrorised by a dark presence in their farmhouse. Terrifying.
Vue, Odeon
The Heat (2013, comedy, 117 mins, 15).
From the director of Bridesmaids and starring its breakout star Melissa McCarthy, this is standard buddy cop fayre. Sandra Bullock plays the straight role. McCarthy's rise to the A-list is well deserved, this is already her fourth hit of 2013.
Vue, Odeon
From Up on Poppy Hill (2011, animation, 91 mins, PG).
Latest film from legendary Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli. A group of Yokohama teens look to save their school from demolition in preparations for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Depressingly, this is the dubbed US version and not the Japanese original with subtitles. Still worth a look though.
Everyman Hampstead
The Smurfs 2 (2013, animation, 105 mins, PG).
Sequel to the surprise hit of 2011.
Vue, Odeon
Red 2 (2013, action, 116 mins, 12A)
Unnecessary sequel to the average action film from 2010, of which I can’t remember anything. I wouldn't and you shouldn't.
Vue, Odeon
